...on Poetry and Fiction - Just "One Word" Away (Winter)

Poetry and Fiction – Just “One Word” Away (Winter)

One word becomes one idea, becomes one sentence, becomes one poem, becomes one story. It must start from just “one word”. Today my one word is “Winter”.

                                                                    WINTER

Ol’ Man “Winter” loves to visit each year. He is such a frightful man, and enjoys carrying a heavy cane with him. He uses his cane to tap at our windows and bang on our doors, and always manages to get into our homes. He is quite large and wears a huge cape. His face is as grey as his long aging hair and his teeth are as rotten as devil’s decay. The stench he leaves behind with every step will stop you in your tracks. Just keep the home fires burning, your rooms cozy, and appreciate the magic of the white fallen snow outside. Winter is absolutely beautiful, yet Ol’ Man Winter expertly tries to make it ugly. He is smart and he is cunning, but we are just as sharp. So remember that once he gets into your home, flush him out with the happy glow of your fireplace. He will fall to his death from a large window in your home, and remain buried in the new fallen snow. Yes, he will awaken next Winter, but now we know what to do with him!

                                                                        WINTER

Ol’ Man Winter came knocking at my door
With cane in hand - he blew right in
tapping on my floor
His frigid fingers iced my home
The fireplace went out
He left snowy footprints all around
and flung his cape about
The echoes of his violent steps
left everyone in awe
His frightful aura
His violent strut
Shook us to the core
His wretched face and decayed teeth
made for an unwanted guest
With maligned smile and putrid scent
He put us to the test
His grey strands of aging hair
fell about the room
His unspoken words and hissing slurs
were dressed with doom and gloom
We let him trudge step by step
to our bedrooms up above
Unbeknownst to him
we relit the fireplace
and the swelter donned a shove
We smiled with glee
when we heard him leave
through the window in the walkway
Ol’ Man Winter fell to his death
Buried on this “Snow Day”

Sometimes the seasons approach our lives so fiercely, that we personify them with characters of their own. We greet them, study them, embrace them - then finally learn how to accept them and what, exactly, we need to do with them the next time they stop by!!!

...And the Decorating Begins...(Christmas 2019)

Yes...That time of year again...and the decorating begins...I need to hurry up, because Christmas seems to be chasing us down this year, with Thanksgiving coming later in the month of November...Once it catches up to us - oh well - then the decorating/decorations come down again. It all happens so fast. We can almost miss it if we don't move as fast as time.

So - happy decorating! Peace, love, joy and good health to everyone - and a Merry Christmas to All!

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL...MAY PEACE, LOVE AND JOY BE YOURS THROUGHOUT THIS HOLIDAY SEASON! xoxo

"Possessed by Christmas"
- by Phyllis P. Colucci
aka "FictionTarot"

Christmas carols, holly bells
     Angels’ breath and blissful spells
Pine cone wreaths and blue spruce trees
     Mistletoe and winter’s freeze
Spirit magic, St. Nick’s smile
     Chestnuts roasting in old-world style
The air is crisp, the snow is white
Peace in its glory to all’s delight
Heaven whispers from its celestial abode
     Emotions heightened, hearts explode
Love rides in on a rolling cloud
Skies open wide, stars twinkle proud
People nestled in fur-lined wear
Strolling arm in arm with enchanted stare
The world possessed by Noel’s magic
     Children beaming, life less tragic
Horse-drawn carriages glide through the park
     Enchanted lovers snuggle after dark
The light of the moon ignites the snow
Those lovers gleam with the Season’s glow
Morning arrives with sunlit grin
     Strangers suddenly become our kin
Delighted animals frolic about
The backyard cat purrs with frozen snout
The snow, the ice the great big chill
     Christmas magic – what a thrill !
Deer peek out from behind a tree
The earth is calm, the world is free
Tranquil moments through Christmas season
Charmed hope has met with reason
Holiday lights, store windows aglow
     Shoppers bustling; kiddies in tow
Candles flicker in every home
Snowmen are built, snowballs are thrown
Such wondrous joy has settled in
Christmas arrives – an ethereal win!

Veteran's Day - Thank a Veteran! (November 11, 2019)

Today is Veteran's Day (November 11, 2019). Don't forget to thank a Veteran. They are special people, doing special things. They are fearless, strong, giving and selfless. They are patriots fighting for a free world - and a free America. While we are home living our lives freely, on a daily basis, and knowing that by the end of each day we can rest happily and safely in the comfort of our own homes and our own beds, these amazing men and women are standing ground, fighting wars, and may never know where they will be sleeping at night. They have given up every comfort that we are allowed to enjoy, as they move forward in their goals of accomplishing special and dangerous missions in the name of Freedom. So be mindful of these wonderful souls, who were/are protecting your life and your freedoms. Just think about them, thank them whenever possible, and let them know that they are never and will never be forgotten.

So, today, I thank every Veteran (family, friend, and all others), living and deceased, for their service; and a special thank you to that young, handsome gentleman in the photo up above, whom I call Dad. He was a proud brave soldier and trained Medic in the US Army during WWII. When he was laid to rest back in 2003, at the age of 80, he was memorialized at his Funeral with the American Flag draped over his coffin. That was my way of saying good-bye to this special man, special Dad and dedicated soldier. At the least, I had to do this one last thing for him in the name of love.

Unfortunately, back in 2003, the US military was involved with all the chaos in the Middle East as we still are today. I was advised by the Funeral Director that because of our involvement in the Middle East at the time of Dad's wake/funeral, the United States was short on military personnel and it may be impossible for the military to send people down to give my Dad a proper burial with the military touch (as all deceased military are entitled to and have gotten in the past.) My immediate reaction was one of bitterness, tears and annoyance. I stressed to the Funeral Director that my Dad fought for this country, and he deserved to have a small military presence and service, performed by military personnel, at his funeral and burial. I was very upset when I added, "This is unacceptable!" This is no way to treat a veteran. I wanted my Mom to have the privilege of military personnel present, and performing a small service on the day of Dad's burial. I wanted her to have the opportunity of receiving that wonderful folded American flag in that special way only the military knew how to do. My Dad made sacrifices in fighting for this country, and now it was time for his country to give back to him, my Mom and our family in a small way with this requested gesture. The Funeral Director graciously said, "I'll see what I can do". As it turned out, two young military personnel, in dress uniforms, attended and performed a small ceremony at Dad's coffin, on the day of his funeral. Mom proudly accepted the folded flag from his coffin. I knew Dad was looking down and smiling because I fought for his rights and his freedom on this day.

So always remember to "thank" a Veteran. They deserve that. Trust me, they all have a story of the good, the bad and the ugliness of war. Their families have suffered greatly when these men and women were taken from them to fight for our freedoms. Some made it back, some didn't. Regardless, they are all special people and must never be forgotten.  xoxoxoxoxo

...On Poetry and Fiction - Just "One Word" Away (Stars)

One word becomes one idea, becomes one sentence, becomes one poem, becomes one story. It must start from just “one word”. Today my one word is “Stars”.

                                                                    STARS

Ever study the stars in the evening sky? Some twinkle, some not so much. Others sparkle as bright as diamonds. They are alive and beg to speak with us. We all know it is our greatest desire to wish upon a star and have all our dreams come true. We may focus our eyes upon that one special star, and hope for answers about love and life. We beg for more detailed information, so we can walk away feeling enlightened and empowered to make the wisest decisions. If you watch closely, every star will speak to you through morse code or through a living heartbeat. They will reveal clues to your deepest curiosities through every twinkle. Absorb their rhythm, read their sparkle, and decipher their wondrous code. Remain alert to their magic, and try not to blink - or you will miss one great celestial conversation of a lifetime.

STARS

Some twinkle, some not
Some sparkle bright hot
To wish upon a star
On celestial bodies from afar
To make all dreams come true
To welcome life anew
Where lovers seek answers
from mysteries of the sky,
begging for more details
about the who, the what, the why
The stars retort through morse code
and through the evening glow
As the moon ignites their spirit -
their words an even flow
Each twinkle like a heartbeat
Every message has a clue
Don’t blink, my friend
Remain alert!
Charmed stars will speak to you!

13 DAYS OF HALLOWEEN - 2019 (THEME) (Spillwords Press) (POEM)

Embrace "Halloween Essence". It enhances the change from Summer to Fall, and it welcomes October with a holiday of its own. Children and adults wait for it each year, and eagerly anticipate it with either smiles - or great fear !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN ! ! !

HALLOWEEN ESSENCE

Pumpkins and scarecrows
Autumn whispers galore
October breezes, orange hues, crisp fallen leaves
and so much more…

“Halloween Essence” riding in on a broom!
Witches and Warlocks
cast spells of great doom
They land at each doorstep
with spell book in tow
Shrieking and screeching
Keeping heads low
Tip-toeing about
Leaving ghastly footsteps behind
Settling down in your home
Possessing your mind

Ghosts and goblins join in
Quite a gang in your space
Taking over your house
Masks of fear on your face
Doors and windows are locked
You are trapped in your bed!
Visions of evil dance in your head!
…Odors of wicked brew - permeate the air
All you can do  - - is inhale and beware!

…Ah! But Halloween night
becomes a new day
The sinister gang
has faded away
Until next Halloween
when they ride in on a broom
Right back at your doorstep
with darkness and gloom!

...On Poetry and Fiction - Just "One Word" Away (Window)

Poetry and Fiction – Just “One Word” Away (Window)

One word becomes one idea, becomes one sentence, becomes one poem, becomes one story. It must start from just “one word”. Today my one word is “Window”.

                                                                    WINDOW

A Window is a portal to the outside world. It allows us to view the world and admire its treasures through its magical “looking glass”. An Open Window invites the outside world into our homes and into our lives. A Closed Window allows us to watch privately, with caution, until we are ready to say “come in”. To some, a Window is a connection to something or someone when we are lonely or curious. To others, it is an invasion of privacy. To most of us, it is a chance to see what’s happening beyond our four walls. In life, it is a choice. So whether you choose to live with an “open” window, or you prefer a “closed” window, you will only be able to enjoy the results of that choice. Either way, a window will always be that portal to a world outside of ourselves. When it is open, it will be your own personal give and take reality. When it is closed, it will still be special through its magical looking glass. However, an open window will allow us to connect, relate and interact on an emotional level while a closed window will limit us to a simple view from the sidelines. Which will you choose?

WINDOW

Window! Window!
From my home
A portal to the outside unknown
Such jewels, past my looking glass
A regal view, a touch of class
Shall I open you wide and clear?
Or keep you closed
And hide my fear?
Window! Window!
Hear my voice
Open…Close…is quite a choice
I want to shout that I am here
I want to invite those far and near
Window! Window!
Let life in
It’s give and take – a perfect win
I see love, I feel it too
I hear sweet voices
Between me and you
I can feel the sun and touch the breeze
Sweet summer bliss
Deep Winter’s freeze
The good, the bad and all that’s fair
Relationships - if you dare
Window! Window!
Let me see
Shall I hide my eyes or let things be?
If you remain closed
Will I remain free?
Window! Window!
I’ve changed my mind
Please open wide
If you’d be so kind
Emotions, passion are what I crave
From the day of birth
To the day of grave
Window! Window!
Closed no more
Great gifts of plenty
…treasures galore!
