...On Poetry and Fiction - Just "One Word" Away (Addiction)

One word becomes one idea, becomes one sentence, becomes one poem, becomes one story. It must start from just “one word”. Today my one word is “Addiction”.

NOTE: "Addiction" is a powerful word. Disguised as a friend, "Addiction" leads the addict down a dark and lonely path of destruction - hurting not only themselves, but all of their loved ones. Along this vicious journey, there will be road signs leading to "Recovery". All the addict needs to do is reach out. That is their promise and that is their plan. They just have to want it bad enough. May God bless, protect and assist all those affected by "Addiction".

                                                                    ADDICTION

Addiction, like a Halloween mask, hides the good and shows the bad and the ugly. Addicts are lost within themselves, chained to addiction and screaming to get out. Broken promises, broken hearts, broken dreams, families hurt, families lost, friendships torn apart, because the next high is much more inviting. Addiction is the new best friend and favorite family member, always offering a huge slice of deception and despair on a bright and shining silver platter. There “they” go again, eating up slice after slice, licking their lips, wanting more and more. As “they” continue to travel down this dark and lonely path, addicts will try desperately to reach out to the blinking neon signs that read “Recovery”. Instead, they will continuously pass them by, promising to come back next time around. That’s their plan, and that’s their promise. They’re just not there yet. But they will be. One day at a time. They will be. Recovery is just around the bend, waiting patiently and blinking brightly. The addicts have not stopped by yet - but again, that’s their plan and that’s their promise. They are just not there yet. Hopefully, it’s not too late…The only “Fiction” in this month’s piece (June 2019), submitted to Spillwords Press at Spillwords.com, is that “Addiction” is a friend.

ADDICTION

“The Look”
The look of loss and the look of despair
The mask that hides their good
The mask that shows their bad and ugly
A vicious cycle
Nowhere to run and nowhere to hide
Broken dreams, broken hearts, broken promises
Broken families, broken homes, broken life
Addiction is in full control
Addiction has chained them
to its wicked arm
Addiction holds them captive
within their own bodies
Addiction is in the driver’s seat
Disguised as a friend
It leads them down a dark and lonely path
It serves them slice after slice
of deception and despair
They eat it up, and lick their lips
Wanting more and more each time
Yet they keep making the same promise
While “Recovery” is so close, yet so far away
They can almost touch it
All they need to do is reach out
Reach out just a little farther
And it will be there
Waiting in the wings
Yes, they’ll keep making that promise
And yes, that’s their plan
They’re just not there yet
They will be
Maybe not today
Maybe not tomorrow
Maybe somewhere down the road
That’s their promise
That’s their plan
They’re just not there yet
But, hopefully, they will be
