...On Poetry and Fiction - Just "One Word" Away (Window)

Poetry and Fiction – Just “One Word” Away (Window)

One word becomes one idea, becomes one sentence, becomes one poem, becomes one story. It must start from just “one word”. Today my one word is “Window”.

                                                                    WINDOW

A Window is a portal to the outside world. It allows us to view the world and admire its treasures through its magical “looking glass”. An Open Window invites the outside world into our homes and into our lives. A Closed Window allows us to watch privately, with caution, until we are ready to say “come in”. To some, a Window is a connection to something or someone when we are lonely or curious. To others, it is an invasion of privacy. To most of us, it is a chance to see what’s happening beyond our four walls. In life, it is a choice. So whether you choose to live with an “open” window, or you prefer a “closed” window, you will only be able to enjoy the results of that choice. Either way, a window will always be that portal to a world outside of ourselves. When it is open, it will be your own personal give and take reality. When it is closed, it will still be special through its magical looking glass. However, an open window will allow us to connect, relate and interact on an emotional level while a closed window will limit us to a simple view from the sidelines. Which will you choose?

WINDOW

Window! Window!
From my home
A portal to the outside unknown
Such jewels, past my looking glass
A regal view, a touch of class
Shall I open you wide and clear?
Or keep you closed
And hide my fear?
Window! Window!
Hear my voice
Open…Close…is quite a choice
I want to shout that I am here
I want to invite those far and near
Window! Window!
Let life in
It’s give and take – a perfect win
I see love, I feel it too
I hear sweet voices
Between me and you
I can feel the sun and touch the breeze
Sweet summer bliss
Deep Winter’s freeze
The good, the bad and all that’s fair
Relationships - if you dare
Window! Window!
Let me see
Shall I hide my eyes or let things be?
If you remain closed
Will I remain free?
Window! Window!
I’ve changed my mind
Please open wide
If you’d be so kind
Emotions, passion are what I crave
From the day of birth
To the day of grave
Window! Window!
Closed no more
Great gifts of plenty
…treasures galore!

...On Poetry and Fiction – Just “One Word” Away (Guilt)

http://spillwords.com/author/phyllispcolucci/

One word becomes one idea, becomes one sentence, becomes one poem, becomes one story. It must start from just “one word”. Today my one word is “Guilt”.

                                                                    GUILT

You will find “Guilt” in your morning coffee. It will be staring up at you with each and every sip. It will glare at you until you look away. It will escort you to wherever you are going each and every day. It will interrupt you at work, ruin your lunch hour and never allow you to have quality time or simple conversations with friends. It will accompany you home in the evenings and sit on your lap while you are trying to have dinner. It will hold you hostage as you try to break free in order to enjoy the company of your wonderful family. It will even stop you from appreciating the unconditional love of your loyal pet, who sits at your feet looking confused. You can try ignoring it, slapping it away, cursing at it, screaming at it, but it will remain with you. “Guilt” is relentless. It is strong and it is one big irritating thorn in your side. Just when you think you might have pushed it away for a while, it remains seated right there on the couch with you as you try to watch tv, phone a friend, or take a nap. – And then, it will jump right into bed with you, hogging up the covers and leaving you cold and awake most every night. The only way it will leave you alone, is when your mind and heart both agree that it is time to let it go, while you make amends and right your wrongs.

GUILT

It’s in the morning air we breathe
The first to greet us with open eyes
The breakfast coffee
The eggs and toast
The morning commute
“Guilt” is there to boast
It speaks of sadness
and vicious lies
It holds us hostage
while in disguise
It reminds us of
where we went wrong
Who we hurt
Where we didn’t belong
Why we did and said
those awful things
Such harsh, evil words
Served with all that stings
It tags along throughout the day
There is no peace
as it leads the way
You’re finally home to
your humble place
While “guilt” still wears
its smirking face
It sits at your feet
while you pray it will go
It slips into your bed
It dims your evening glow
It stays for the night
Torments you with your past
It beams in delight
and cuddles you at last
Happy to taunt you
for all you’ve done wrong
“Guilt” is relentless
Your night just grows long
Until suddenly you realize
All can be fine
It is time to make amends
Time to cross that fine line
Change sadness into sweet songs
Tell guilt “be gone”
Let apologies speak
And right all your wrongs

"GUILT" remains with us every day, until we are ready to let it go. We can only do that if we allow our hearts and minds to come together as we decide at that point to let "Guilt" go; to right our wrongs and to make amends. It's as simple as making a choice.

...On Poetry and Fiction – Just “One Word” Away (Ambrosia)

One word becomes one idea, becomes one sentence, becomes one poem, becomes one story. It must start from just “one word”. Today my one word is “Ambrosia”.

                                                                        AMBROSIA

Never did I think “Ambrosia” would become my friend and savior today. I’ve always heard how special it was. Ambrosia was considered the food of the Greek gods. It represented longevity and/or immortality for anyone who consumed it. Today, I made it for the first time and I brought it over to my neighbor’s home. The irony here is that this food of longevity and/or immortality was my spur-of-the-moment choice to prepare and take over to a friend’s house during his time of loss and mourning. “Ambrosia” looked so beautiful today, like a princess waiting for her prince. “Ambrosia” suddenly took on a delightful feminine persona, which captured my heart. She was as stunning as she was delectable - and I created her. She smelled like mandarin oranges and pineapple, with a hint of coconut. I bathed her in whipped topping and magically spun her around, then garnished her with maraschino cherries. She looked up at me from the fancy flowered ceramic bowl that was her home, and simply smiled through the waves of whipped topping and marshmallow bits that majestically surrounded her. I smiled back proudly, lifted her gently, then carried her over to my grieving friend and neighbor.

 AMBROSIA

A guest unknown to me
greeted me at the door and welcomed me in
I saw my dear friend,
sitting in a corner with his two children
He grieved for the loss of a young wife
“They” grieved for the loss of a wonderful Mom
I grieved for the loss of a special friend

I walked past them and nodded quietly
He acknowledged me with a sullen smile
His children remained silent in his lap
I headed toward the kitchen
and placed “Ambrosia” in an empty spot,
high upon the top shelf of his refrigerator

I felt like a stranger in his home – in her home
…Walking in “their” kitchen
…Opening “their” refrigerator door
…Just like his deceased wife, and my best friend, would do
This was still her home
She was still his wife and his children’s Mom
She was still my good friend and neighbor
She was gone, but her spirit lived here…

He soon joined me in the kitchen,
but did not utter one word
Our eyes met and I felt his pain
Our eyes met and he felt my friendship
He placed his hand upon my shoulder
while the tears rolled down his cheeks
I removed the silk handkerchief from his chest pocket
and placed it in his hand, as he dried his eyes

The dining room was bustling
with loud conversation and faint laughter
It was time for “Ambrosia” to make her appearance
I removed her from the refrigerator
and placed her on the table in front of him
He grabbed a spoon
and gently lifted the essence of Ambrosia
        to his quivering lips

He smiled and winked at me through his tears
       as I kissed his cheek
I carried “Ambrosia” to the dining room
and set her down on the long mahogany table
for all the family and guests to see
There she sat for all to admire, enjoy and consume
Today “Ambrosia” became a friend
Today “Ambrosia” became a Savior
- - For me, for them, and for my grieving neighbor

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR

"Ambrosia", which was considered the food of the Greek gods, represented longevity and/or immortality; Yet, ironically, it brought comfort to those in mourning.
...So, in life, the simple gestures may become the greatest gifts.

...On Poetry and Fiction - Just "One Word" Away (Addiction)

One word becomes one idea, becomes one sentence, becomes one poem, becomes one story. It must start from just “one word”. Today my one word is “Addiction”.

NOTE: "Addiction" is a powerful word. Disguised as a friend, "Addiction" leads the addict down a dark and lonely path of destruction - hurting not only themselves, but all of their loved ones. Along this vicious journey, there will be road signs leading to "Recovery". All the addict needs to do is reach out. That is their promise and that is their plan. They just have to want it bad enough. May God bless, protect and assist all those affected by "Addiction".

                                                                    ADDICTION

Addiction, like a Halloween mask, hides the good and shows the bad and the ugly. Addicts are lost within themselves, chained to addiction and screaming to get out. Broken promises, broken hearts, broken dreams, families hurt, families lost, friendships torn apart, because the next high is much more inviting. Addiction is the new best friend and favorite family member, always offering a huge slice of deception and despair on a bright and shining silver platter. There “they” go again, eating up slice after slice, licking their lips, wanting more and more. As “they” continue to travel down this dark and lonely path, addicts will try desperately to reach out to the blinking neon signs that read “Recovery”. Instead, they will continuously pass them by, promising to come back next time around. That’s their plan, and that’s their promise. They’re just not there yet. But they will be. One day at a time. They will be. Recovery is just around the bend, waiting patiently and blinking brightly. The addicts have not stopped by yet - but again, that’s their plan and that’s their promise. They are just not there yet. Hopefully, it’s not too late…The only “Fiction” in this month’s piece (June 2019), submitted to Spillwords Press at Spillwords.com, is that “Addiction” is a friend.

ADDICTION

“The Look”
The look of loss and the look of despair
The mask that hides their good
The mask that shows their bad and ugly
A vicious cycle
Nowhere to run and nowhere to hide
Broken dreams, broken hearts, broken promises
Broken families, broken homes, broken life
Addiction is in full control
Addiction has chained them
to its wicked arm
Addiction holds them captive
within their own bodies
Addiction is in the driver’s seat
Disguised as a friend
It leads them down a dark and lonely path
It serves them slice after slice
of deception and despair
They eat it up, and lick their lips
Wanting more and more each time
Yet they keep making the same promise
While “Recovery” is so close, yet so far away
They can almost touch it
All they need to do is reach out
Reach out just a little farther
And it will be there
Waiting in the wings
Yes, they’ll keep making that promise
And yes, that’s their plan
They’re just not there yet
They will be
Maybe not today
Maybe not tomorrow
Maybe somewhere down the road
That’s their promise
That’s their plan
They’re just not there yet
But, hopefully, they will be

...On Poetry and Fiction – Just “One Word” Away (Ghosts)

One word becomes one idea, becomes one sentence, becomes one poem, becomes one story. It must start from just “one word”. Today my one word is “Ghosts”.

                                                                    GHOSTS

Ghosts from our past, present and future are not covered in translucent white cloths, flying around us, hissing and booing like disembodied souls. They are not ghastly creatures trying desperately to frighten us with their evil presence. They are our life’s ghosts. So go ahead! Open your eyes! Our ghosts are there! They are always around us. They want to interact with us. They are visions of people and memories from our “past”, visitors in our “present”, and possible opportunities in our “future”. We learn from the ghosts of our “past”, we live with the ghosts in our “present”, and we anticipate the ghosts from our “future”. We must all recognize our own ghosts and listen to their messages. Learn from past visions, past voices, current visits, new conversations, their words of wisdom, and future possibilities. These special ghosts are time travelers who secretly accompany us on life’s journeys. Once you realize their presence, overcome your fear, and embrace their worth, you will soon discover that your ghosts are simply your protective guardian angels teaching you life’s lessons.

GHOSTS

No translucent white cloths?
No flying creatures?
No ghastly beings?
No hissing and booing of disembodied souls?
No Ghosts you say?…No Ghosts I pray!
But there is something disrupting my day!
Visions and Memories
From a “Past” life
Living with an entity in my “Present”
Anticipating an eerie “Future”
Past voices
Current visits
New conversations
Words of Wisdom
Future Possibilities
No Ghosts you say?…No Ghosts I pray!
I feel them, I do – don’t you?
I remember the “Past”
I know the “Present”
I fear the “Future”
I live with these time travelers
Who secretly accompany me
– I am no longer free!
Who might they be?
Yes! They are there!
But where? Is this fair?
My Present becomes My Past
My Future becomes My Present
All riding in on the backs of these Ghosts!
No Ghosts you say?..No Ghosts I pray!
…But they speak to me of life’s lessons
They whisper gently into my ear
They pave the way on my journey
And my fright is no longer here
For I embrace them with love
These smiling beings from above
So Ghosts they are not
I will accept them, somewhat
From a world away…
- My Guardian Angels are they!
