...My Interview (Q&A) For "Spotlight on Writers" series, presented by Spillwords.com

Below is My Interview (Q&A) For "Spotlight on Writers" series, presented by Spillwords.com:

Spotlight On Writers

Phyllis P. Colucci

  1. Where, do you hail from?
I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and I sincerely  carry that New York blood in my heart and soul. I will always be a proud New  Yorker and Brooklynite no matter where I live in the future. Growing up in Brooklyn was all about a connection; a connection to family, community, friends  - and I have and share the utmost respect for my Italian roots and heritage. I still live in the same Italian neighborhood in which I grew up, but have now  witnessed the many changes as well. Some for the better, some not.  "Gentrification" has invaded our space. Many of the "old-timers" have  either passed on or, unfortunately, have been chased out by developers  who have torn down quaint row houses, mom and pop shops - and "our"  spirit. They have replaced all of that with large apartment  complexes. Yes, the value of real estate in the area has skyrocketed as a  result, but the echo of a simple and wonderful life with the memory of the  people that once "were", will forever exist in the streets of "my" Brooklyn.
  1. What is the greatest thing about the place you call home?
The greatest thing about the place I call home is the warm feeling  I get when I think about the "old" days; the special friends and people  I've known, the wise elders I've adored, the lessons I've learned from those relationships, the values I've honored, and the sense of love and family that has been, and always will be, instilled in me and those closest to me. The memory of small family homes, tree-lined streets, pizza stores on every block, social clubs, Italian coffee shops, pastry shops and family-owned bread stores, with the hint of  tantalizing food aromas in the air,  will be etched in my mind forever.  Living here was like living in a small  town within a Big City. We always had the best of both worlds.
  1. What turns you on creatively?
What turns me on creatively has more to do with spirit and emotion  than anything else. It's all about feelings that wake up the senses and keep me in tune to my surroundings and my life. It could be as simple as the aromas of freshly brewed coffee, or as intense as the sounds of nature happening outside my backyard window, or as beautiful as the innocent breath  of a sleeping child. As long as there are magical triggers out there  that I can mingle with or react to on a daily basis, I will always find  creativity - with that New York edge.
  1. What is your favorite word, and can you use it in a poetic sentence?
My favorite word is "angelic".
My poetic sentence is:
"The 'angelic' voices hiding high above the clouds, will sound upon the earth once Mother Nature has something sweet to say to us."
  1. What is your pet peeve?
My pet peeve is "Procrastination". Procrastination robs us of our  time - quality time that we should be spending with ourselves, with our  friends, with our families, with our jobs, with the Divine. It stifles us to the point where we can no longer be productive, where we can no longer thrive, where  we are unable to accomplish all that would make us successful, all that would  allow us to contribute to society; and all that would make us better friends, partners, parents, brothers, sisters, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and so on. Life is too short.  Do not waste it on "Procrastination".
  1. What defines Phyllis P. Colucci?
What defines me? Well, I would have to say, first and foremost, being a Mom. It is the most rewarding, yet sometimes toughest job there is.  Any parent will understand that, for sure. Secondly, there is my writing  -  one of my special loves and one of my deepest passions. My  writing allows me to learn, to create, and to grow as a person. My writing also  gives me one of the greatest gifts of all - the gift of sharing...Sharing my  words, my characters and my stories with the world.

VOICES

written by: Phyllis P. Colucci
@FictionTarot

Rosalie was numb. She thought to herself, “Could I be going crazy? Am I suffering from schizophrenia?” Maria and Franco also looked surprised. Rosalie caught Maria and Franco glancing at each other. Could they possibly be wondering the same thing, that Rosalie was going crazy. Rosalie, suddenly in tears, blurted out, “So what does this mean Ms. Price? Am I crazy? Am I imagining these voices? Is this all in my head? What are you sensing Ms. Price?” Franco put his arms around Rosalie and hugged her tightly from behind. Maria patted Rosalie’s shoulder.
Ms. Price, showing an unusually sensitive side, took Rosalie’s hand and said, “You are not going crazy my dear. I said I am not picking up any negative energy, but I am picking up something. I must ask you this, however - Have both your parents passed?” Rosalie nodded in the affirmative. “Well dear, coming forward are two elderly people. One is an attractive woman with gray hair and of short stature who is quite feisty and eager to speak. Alongside her is a tall handsome gentleman, who is very well dressed, wearing a fedora on his head, also eager to come through.” Rosalie looked a bit spooked, but replied that the two elderly people Ms. Price described as coming through to her seem to be her parents. Ms. Price described them to perfection. Rosalie further stated to Ms. Price that she was in shock that they would even present themselves to Ms. Price, because both her parents kept to themselves pretty much and she couldn’t believe that they would actually come forward to a stranger.
Ms. Price explained to Rosalie that in the spirit world there are times when our loved ones want and need to reach out to us. She stressed that they seek to connect with the living through someone like herself, a psychic medium. At this moment Ms. Price had Rosalie’s, Franco’s and Maria’s undivided attention as she continued to bring forth a message from both Rosalie’s parents. “It is a dire warning my dear. They are showing me images that someone close to you Rosalie is trying to come between you and your partner Franco. You must make yourself aware of this and look at your friends and acquaintances. Be very much aware of who you associate with dear. It seems your parents strongly feel someone is trying to hurt you and will go to any extreme to do this. Heed their warning and know that this is their way of coming through and letting you know that they are watching over you at all times. They are with you dear and wish to protect you. Perhaps your nerves are on edge and what you are hearing in the cellar is nothing more than your fear and imagination. Please take time for yourself and relax your mind and body. Take some yoga classes, learn to meditate. Clear your head dear. Calm your mind and focus on this warning from your parents. I am sure that in due time it will all make sense. I will pray for you dear. I did sweep the cellar with burning sage in order to keep it peaceful and calm for you, so do not concern yourself about anything negative there. Feel free to go down to that cellar at any time, it is quite safe. You have my word and my expertise that all is well down there. That is your space, part of your home. Enjoy it without fear. Good luck dear. I must leave, I am pressed for time.” Ms. Price gently tapped Rosalie’s hand, then summoned Franco to show her out.

...on "Labor Day" 2016

Good Morning/Good Afternoon!  Fiction Tarot here...Happy Labor Day to all you workers out there who deserve this one day of recognition.  They say Labor Day is a day to remember and recognize all workers.  I say give yourself the day off and do whatever it is that makes you happy; whether it be resting and relaxation (which would be my choice), shopping online, catching up on social media, meeting friends for brunch, catching up on old movies, cuddling up with a good book, entertaining your family, firing up the barbecue.  Wow!  So many choices.  As an indie writer, it's also a good time to enjoy the quiet of the day and get those creative juices moving, in hopes of catching my next writing idea.  In essence, work hard today to give yourself a great day.  Now is that a paradox, or what? Or is it just the truth?!  Whatever it is - do it, work at it, and enjoy it; because tomorrow you have to go back to work! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Looking out the window today, I see the clouds staggering about, just waiting to cry their eyes out. But then there is the wonderful bright-shining sun popping its magical face in and between those relentless clouds. Tropical Storm "Hermine" (which could have been a hurricane, NOT??) has been threatening the East Coast this week and may or may not be on the attack in New York City.  Some may see "Hermine" as a "downer" for their Labor Day celebrations.  I see "Hermine" as an unwelcome guest who should be greeted regardless, because some guests are just parasites that can't and won't go away. So let them in, acknowledge them, but never take your eyes off them.

In the case of "Hermine", there is no control over it. It will come with a vengeance and/or leave in a hurry without a trace.  Either way, it will come and it will go.  So work around Hermine. Like I mentioned above; there are many choices to be had.  You can spend Labor Day indoors (doing all those great things), or spend it outdoors until you have no choice but to go indoors.  Don't let Hermine ruin your day.  Unless you were told to evacuate (I hope not), fire up that barbecue and eat inside watching your favorite shows on your big screen TV while Hermine lingers outside, lookin' in. Or prepare the yard, set up the yard furniture, and consume that deliciously grilled food, waiting for the Hurricane or Tropical Storm that wasn't. Either way you win.  Either way you get to enjoy good food, good drink, family, friends, laughter, conversation, or alone time - and a great end to the Summer.

Still seems to me like so much effort and work goes into planning and maintaining a perfect Labor Day - this year anyway. Not really the best way to do Labor Day. Wondering if and when "It" will hit. Yet you continue to wonder, to stress, to toil over "It", too tired to enjoy Labor Day - your Labor Day! Before you know it, tomorrow will be here.  You may be too mentally and somewhat physically exhausted to go to work.  You may need Tuesday off to recuperate from Monday.  One word of advice, however; if you do take Tuesday off, DO NOT post those multiple, fun-loving, friendly, family photos on Facebook of that great time you had on Labor Day (with or without Hermine). Why, you ask?  Well if your boss checks out your Facebook page, he/she will learn why you didn't come in to work on Tuesday to complete your work deadlines from Friday. So now more work and more stress this Labor Day, to ensure you don't run into any issues with your boss on Tuesday. All this anxiety! Social media can certainly be a curse or a blessing. It depends on what you do with it, how you do it, why you do it, and what the repercussions may be. Whatever happened to disposable cameras?? The ones that kept your secrets, gave you some privacy, and allowed you to hide the evidence  -  Oh relax, you'll figure it out.

...So far, here in New York City, the clouds and sun are playing "tag" and "hide and go seek" with each other. Very calm though.  I don't smell the grand aromas of backyard barbecues, nor do I hear the hustle and bustle of kids playing and screaming in their backyard pools.  The streets are pretty quiet (like a holiday/holiday weekend), but in the air is that threat of Hermine.  It seems people may be very cautious in their Labor Day celebrations this year, and may be celebrating quietly (or not at all), away from the view of the many curious and inquisitive Brooklyn neighbors who hide behind their windows and blinds. Whatever...there is still some strangeness in the air this year.

Weather reports have varied thus far, although something will occur up the East Coast. Hermine may drop some heavy rains, may cause coastal flooding and storm surges, dangerous riptides and ripcurrents, high winds, and the like. We won't really know until it happens. So far, New York has been spared.  Although the determining factors will actually be within the next few days into mid-week, as the weather reports predict.  All in all, the Labor Day weekend was nothing less than fine in NYC, except for the lingering threat of Hermine, which forced the pessimists to forget it was Labor Day and just take pleasure in a day off; while the optimists kept their plans and had a Grand Ol' Time all weekend, including today, Monday, Labor Day, September 5th, 2016, as if Hermine never existed. Good for them - because so far, so good.  Me, I chose to write a post to my Blog today, because Labor Day and Hermine gave me some food for thought and a writing trigger.  Of course I have some great leftovers in the fridge from yesterday that would put some (not all) backyard barbecues to shame.  That's coming from me, Fiction Tarot, an Italian female living in Brooklyn, who believes in family-style Sunday dinners, with leftovers for Monday; which, in this case, has proven to be the savior of Labor Day and not an inkling of a problem because of visiting Hermine.  After all, I am from the "just in case" generation, who was taught by the "just in case" generations before her, that cooking Italian, cooking large and cooking enough for the next day, will always "SAVE THE DAY!" -   So take that Hermine!

On a more serious note, for anyone who has been affected by Hurricane or Tropical Storm Hermine, or who may or will be affected in the coming days...prayers and blessings that you/we recover from any damages, and that we all remain safe. If Hermine leaves without issue, thank you and God Bless!

(JUST A COUPLE OF PHOTOS OF THE BACKYARDS IN BROOKLYN, NY, PRE-HERMINE.  ALL IS CALM AND ALL IS SAFE...Nothing yet happening this Labor Day!)

...My Writing Style at a Glance - "Treasure Chest of Words" (A Collection of Original Poems)

Here is an excerpt from an ebook of poetry I recently put together.  These are poems I have written over the years on various subjects; I have dated them to the best of my recollection and documentation.  The book is titled "Treasure Chest of Words" (A Collection of Original Poems)

A ROSEBUSH
(March 16, 1987)

A Rosebush sheds the winter’s frost
Awaiting summer bliss
As June unfolds a tender smile
Upon her lips, a kiss

The garden wakes to melodies
Of birds and sweet, soft breeze
While Mother Nature leads the dance
Of the emerald trees

Has life adorned me, once again,
with its mystical eyes?
Or has it come to lure me, with its mask
of seasonal lies?
…Lure me to the depths of evil,
where ice runs through my veins?
…Or lure me towards summer bliss,
and June’s soft, subtle rains…

I hope to waken to nature’s kiss
of sun-sweet, golden morn;
and frolic in her limpid lakes,
where souls may be reborn;
With hopes that lyin’ masks will die,
or hide within her song;
...Until the Rosebush sheds the frost,
of the wicked winter-long

A MEMORY
(February 8, 1988)

Riding upon nocturnal breezes,
whirling wondrously; She came…

She stopped but for a moment,
to kiss the full moon with her silhouette;
As she danced so gracefully amidst the shining stars.
Pouring rain stained her veil,
and a whipping wind galloped through her golden hair.

It massaged her cheekbones
with abrasive hands
…While her onyx eyes sparkled - like two fireflies in the darkened night.
Her ruby lips sat upon her face,
and captured the moonlight like a precious gem.
And She came; riding upon nocturnal breezes,
whirling wondrously, again.

…and “He”- he slept in dreamlike joy,
with a flutter in his heart -
Just awaiting her return;
For too long, they were apart
…and through eerie darkness,
she flew across his floor.
She landed softly at his feet,
and stood before him, near the door!

She calmed his soul
with her enchanting flight…
Yet he remained in trance-like sleep, on this very night
Then she magically escaped the bonds
of her flowing white-silk gown,
And pressed her pale warm flesh
against his naked body…

She protected him with love and warmth,
as their souls met, once again;
But she left before he woke,
to spare him a “good-bye” and final end.

…the morning light came crashing through
the window in his room,
And brought that same strange silence
that pushed him to his ruin!
…He focused his weary eyes upon her smiling photograph –
Then hung his head and cried…

ALL IN A NIGHT
(Summer of 1988)

Whispering winds sing such sweet songs
Lingering chimes thrill the night
The sea roars wild in the twilight
Crashing its waves of foam white
Old sand castles fade where the shore wets its lips
Echoes of fog horns bounce off the tips
Of the rocks in the moonlight which shimmer so fine
Like the lustrous sheen of onyx divine

The deep-daring odor of seaweed is strong
Riding the waves as they tumble along
And cotton-ball clouds float ‘cross the sky
Ducking past moonbeams, then meet eye to eye
The melody heightens as deep darkness falls
The night will grow meek when the Sun Lord calls
And morning will open its arms to the sea
--The waves will fall softly, the sand castles free.

ECHO ‘ROUND THE WORLD
(Summer of 1988)
(Dedicated to Elvis Presley)

When August breezes whisper tunes
of yesterday, I will
remember you…
And through it all, I can recall,
The echo ‘round the world;
“It’s Now or Never”, “Love Me Tender”,
“Good Luck Charm”, and “Surrender”…

There was a sudden death today
and the world became still –
The silence swept the torrid streets
and left behind a chill.
Sorrow filled the hearts of many,
who have listened to him sing –
The man is gone; the Legend lives -
The Legend of the King

Beneath his smile a memory burns
with each vibrant song;
and through the torment of it all,
he never did belong.
This memory, which chains his soul,
of one he loved so dear,
Has grown so huge, since ’58,
and he aches to hold her near.

The grief which reigns would change his life,
His eyes will bleed with tears.
The grief will greet his every day –
His pain will breed his fears.
His home will sob each holiday
from the loss of one so fair.
Her spirit hums a world away,
but often visits there.

A lonely heart he did possess
Yet smiled so warm and true
And from his lips he did confess,
“It Is No Secret (What God Can Do)” –
Yet, through it all he always knew
there was the question “Why?” -
But tears shall fall, and God may call,
an answer from the sky.

…August of ’77 left a sad earth behind…
From the rockin’ halls of heaven,
he looks upon mankind.
Someday he knows we’ll meet again,
so now we say good-bye.
The loss is great – until then,
when we may learn why.

His music fills the universe
and children seem to know,
The man that is a Legend now,
has lived some time ago.
But he sings the world a lullaby
each clear and star-filled night,
and flies about the heavens,
‘til dark meets morning light

When August breezes whisper tunes
of yesterday, I will
remember you…
And through it all, I can recall,
The echo ‘round the world;
“It’s Now or Never”, “Love Me Tender”,
“Good Luck Charm”, and “Surrender”…

...My Writing Style at a Glance - "Secrets and Lies"

Here is an excerpt from a third ebook I recently completed, titled "Secrets and Lies" - CHECK IT OUT!

Through her tears and her many questions, Grace knew that she had to confront her cousin Joe about this. She knew he would be the only one left to have the answers she needed. Joe was the one who handed Grace Jenny’s recipe book at the end of the funeral today. He told Grace that Jenny had left him with that responsibility several weeks ago, while she was hospitalized. Jenny knew she was very sick and wanted to be sure that the book was left in the right hands…So, of course, Joe had to have known about the adoption...Grace was beside herself with sorrow. She was bewildered and uncertain. She had to see Joe as soon as possible, and would be sure to do that right away.

Joe was a successful lawyer, working as a Corporate Attorney for a large firm in Manhattan. Maybe with his legal ties he would agree to help her find her birth parents now that all is said and done. She needed closure…Having pleasurable memories of Joe, Grace thought about how handsome he truly is. Guiltily, she could now see him as a “man” and not her cousin. There was something very strange about what she was feeling at this moment. She was stuck somewhere between family and friend, and was having a hard time figuring out which.

Regardless, she was so proud of Joe and the person he had become. He was tall, slim, and nicely built. He had dark hair, deep brown eyes, and an olive complexion. He always smelled so good, so clean; as if he had just stepped out of the shower. His suits were custom-made with that European touch, and he wore them well. He was smart and he was classy. Yes, Grace was so proud of her cousin Joe. They shared a happy and wonderful relationship over the years. He was always protective of Grace, just like an older brother would be. Sometimes too much, she thought. Joe went over and beyond when it came to Grace. Not only would he protect her from anyone and anything that he thought may pose a threat to Grace – but, as he reached his late teens and early adulthood, he would shower her with special gifts for her birthday and Christmas - Expensive blouses, designer perfumes, Broadway tickets, and fancy dinners for two which they both thoroughly enjoyed together…Now she can understand why. They were never biologically related, and Joe knew it. Yes, Grace truly needed to speak with Joe.

...Yes I am Fortune Teller. You look surprised. Please know that I am very good at what I do. Let me read fortune for you – for free. You come see me. For you I do tarot reading. Tarot is very powerful reading. You will enjoy the experience.

Well I don’t really believe in that kind of thing. I’m Catholic Amira, and this type of thing goes against my religion. It’s really forbidden.

But I have gift from God. I do good thing, not bad. How can good thing be forbidden my friend?

Who is your God, Amira. Is it Allah? I know, because you’re Muslim. We do not practice the same religion. We don’t believe in the same God. Allah is not my God Amira. Still, I don’t believe Allah would approve of Fortune Telling either.

Oh no my friend. You make a little mistake here. Allah is God in Muslim religion, yes; but Allah is not my God too. I am Catholic, like you Lia. Even though my family is from Lebanon, we have many Catholics there. I am good Christian, like you Lia. So as I say, I have gift from God in heaven. Our God Lia. Believe me, I only work for the good, not the bad, not the evil.

Well now I’m even more surprised Amira. I don’t know many Catholics that would choose your line of work as a career. I’m sure you do very good things for some people, but I wouldn’t like to know my future. That’s in God’s hands. God has a plan for all of us Amira, even you. What will be, will be. Now please, I really should go. I’m running late.

Wait my friend. Please. I can help you with family matter, personal matter, finance. Let me read tarot for you. I sense you need some help with family matter. I see aura around you that tells me you are a little sad maybe? In need of a little help maybe? You have some things
on your mind that cause you a little confusion? You worry much. Come…come walk back to
my shop. I read for free.

"Treasure Chest of Words" (A Collection of Original Poems)

Fiction Tarot here... Did you know poets/writers create vivid pictures through words and emotions, just the way artists/painters do through brush strokes and color?  So this is what I tried to do with my new ebook, titled "Treasure Chest of Words".

This book is a short anthology of about sixteen poems I had written over the years, which I finally decided to share.  So welcome to my world of "words" and "emotions"...If you decide to check out "Treasure Chest of Words" (A Collection of Original Poems), by me- Phyllis P. Colucci (Fiction Tarot), I truly hope you enjoy it.  It is a short, quaint little ebook (amazon.com), that may prove to be just a quick read when you're looking for something simple and something calming to relax with.  It could also give you something to think about, while getting your emotions going.

Once Grace found out she was adopted, her entire world was turned upside down.  Not only was that one huge family secret tearing her apart, but one big marital lie added to the agony for Grace and her children. As a result, they were all tormented by her husband's Mafia Boss, Mr. Greco; yet, Grace and her children were saved by the love and support of her cousin Joe (the lawyer), and her family priest. The betrayal, the fear, the love and romance twists, the truth, and the hands of fate, take this story on a journey towards the most beautiful and surprising outcome.

...on "The New Year, 2016"

Well, here it is...another year for new beginnings.  A chance to make a new start, a chance to do things better, enjoy things better, say things better, feel things better, eat better, live better, love better, learn better.  It's our personal choice.  Call it "A New Year's Resolution", or call it something else; but the point is we all need to change for the better and move on with a renewed strength.  If we stay in the same place, the result will always be the same - Nothing good will come of that.  Unless, of course, you're truly in a great place and there is no need for change.  I think, however, there is always room for change.  So with that thought, plan your next move and keep on going.  There will always be new choices to make, new roads to take, and new obstacles to overcome.  Just move wisely and move safely.  Experience life with an open mind, even if it knocks you out of your comfort zone. One never knows what wonderful person, place or thing awaits us.  So carry on with hope in your heart - and try to remember that God will change the things we cannot change.  He will guide and lead us when we feel lost.  All we have to do is acknowledge that and just keep moving.  Whether you walk, skip, run or jump...keep moving.  There will always be somewhere to go, there will always be a road to travel. There will always be a light at the end of the tunnel.  Just be sure you look for it in your travels.  If you don't see it, keep moving. God will provide that light. You will eventually find it. Sounds upbeat, positive and wonderful, doesn't it.  Well I struggle with believing all of that myself; however, it is all we have, and we must keep the faith.  No one's life is perfect, no one is totally happy.  So just keep moving on or you will forever stay in the same place with no hope or dreams for the future - for yourself, your friends or your family.  We can't have that now.  So go, take that first step, take that next step...Great!  See, we can all do it.  Just keep moving ahead.  You can look back every once in a while too, as long as it helps you to move on.  If looking back stifles you, then don't do it.  Just look ahead and keep moving.  Leave the past in that rear-view mirror and watch from the driver's seat as it disappears.  Speed up a bit.  You'll see it disappear faster.  Keep going, stay strong, and good luck!

...now on a sadder note, I learned the day after Christmas that the handsome gentleman who sat across from us at the local diner every Saturday morning, who enjoyed breakfast and shared many conversations with us, was found dead in the East River Christmas Eve morning.  He was an elderly gentleman who we only got to know through our weekly visits to the diner.  He stood out, however.  There was something special about him.  We learned from talking with him that he loved children and he loved baseball. He loved his occasional drink once in a while too.  He also had a "lady-friend" whom he was very fond of.  They recently went to a Broadway play together, went Christmas shopping at the mall together, and had plans to meet for Christmas Eve and Christmas dinner.  He never married, but spent holidays with his nieces and nephews.  He laughed, he joked and he enjoyed making others laugh. That empty chair at the table across from us will forever hold the memory of this wonderful gentleman who decided to stop walking and stop moving this Christmas season.  He forgot that God would have helped him find his way, he forgot to keep moving and to look ahead.  It seemed he had so much more of life to live if he only waited a bit longer to find his light at the end of the tunnel.  Sadly, he chose not to.  I'm not sure what pushed this man over the edge; but I will surely remember the "brave" smile upon his face as he greeted us every Saturday morning at the diner.  May he "rest in peace" and may God bless his weary soul.
